With bids due by July 31, 2024, the projects will be situated at five pre-selected substation sites identified by South African energy company Eskom. The sites include the Harvard, Leander, Theseus, Everest and Merapi substations in the country’s Free State province.
The second bid window for the program is currently procuring 615 MW/2,460 MWh in battery energy storage systems projects, with bids due by June 6, 2024. The tender calls for the procurement of 616 MW/2,464 MWh of battery energy storage systems in South Africa.
Following the signing of the agreements with these additional two projects South Africa has secured a total of 360 MW/1440 MWh storage capacity under the country’s first grid-scale bid window.
Project construction is expected to take no more than 24 months and the storage capacity is expected to come online no later than November 2026. The projects will attract a total investment of R4.7 billion. South African Entity Participation of around 42.23%, and BEE ownership of 40% has been achieved across both projects.
The sites include the Harvard, Leander, Theseus, Everest and Merapi substations in the country’s Free State province. Poised to provide Eskom with enhanced grid capacity while improving the integration of renewable energy, the contracted projects will have a minimum duration of four hours and a minimum capacity of 124 MW.
