To sum up, the results suggest that the economic viability of the pumped storage schemes can be further improved when there is a need for higher energy storage capacity, more days of autonomy, when a low discount rate is applicable, and as PV panel prices decrease. 5. Conclusions and suggestions
Feasibility of introducing Adjustable Speed Pumped Storage generation system to Asian region is studied, for the purpose of contributing project formation in Asia in the future. Expected outcomes of the Study are following.
The installed capacity of a pumped storage scheme is influenced by the requirements of daily peaking power requirements, flexibility in efficient operation of units, storage available in the reservoirs and the area capacity characteristics. The Project will generate 1500 MW by utilizing a design discharge of 374.60 Cumec with rated head of 447.00m.
The economic benefit of pumped storage is more significant in the case of storage by pump alone if using a hydraulic controller (Option 4), with the lowest LCC among all options. The sensitivity analysis showed that pumped storage would be even more cost competitive if the parameters of energy storage capacity and days of autonomy were increased.
