What is solar modulation of cosmic rays?

This process is identified as the solar modulation of cosmic rays (CRs). For this review, CRs are considered to have energies above 1 MeV/nuc and come mainly from outside the heliosphere, with the exception of the anomalous component of cosmic rays (ACRs) which originates inside the heliosphere.

Why is solar modulation not properly modeled?

Peculiarly, the solar modulation of many of these species and their isotopes has not been properly modeled, probably because of uncertainties in their LIS. The dominant and the most important time scale in CRs related to solar activity is the 11-year cycle.

Is the solar modulation model over-simplified?

Although the solar modulation model assumed in this work may be over-simplified, we expect that the more complicated and physical interpretation of the solar modulation is actually contained in the time-variations of the modulation potentials and the renormalization factors. The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Do solar modulation parameters of electrons and positrons differ after reversing heliosphere magnetic field polarity?

We find that the inferred solar modulation parameters of positrons are in good agreement with that of cosmic ray nuclei, and the time evolutions of the solar modulation parameters of electrons and positrons differ after the reversal of the heliosphere magnetic field polarity, which shows clearly the charge-sign dependent modulation effect. 1.

Why do particles of opposite charge experience solar modulation differently?

1. Particles of opposite charge will experience solar modulation differently because they sample different regions of the heliosphere during the same polarity epoch before arriving at Earth or at another observation point. Particle drift effects inside the heliosheath, on the other hand, may be different from upstream (towards the Sun) of the TS.

Does the drift effect explain differences between solar modulation potentials and renormalization factors?

Including the drift effect may explain such differences. Although the solar modulation model assumed in this work may be over-simplified, we expect that the more complicated and physical interpretation of the solar modulation is actually contained in the time-variations of the modulation potentials and the renormalization factors.
