According to CATL, TENER cells achieve an energy density of 430 Wh/L, which it says is “an impressive milestone for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries used in energy storage.” CATL describes TENER as the world's first mass-producible energy storage system with zero degradation in the first five years of use.
Rechargeable batteries lose stored energy when they’re not being used because an idle battery undergoes internal chemical reactions that slowly drain its energy. This “self-discharge” process can eventually consume active ingredients in the cathode, where the electron-spent lithium ions collect while the device is in use.
It lasted more than 20,000 cycles before it hit the 80% capacity cutoff. That translates to driving a jaw-dropping 8 million kms. As part of the study, the researchers compared the new type of battery—which has only recently come to market—to a regular lithium-ion battery that lasted 2,400 cycles before it reached the 80% cutoff.
As anyone who uses a smartphone or drives an electric vehicle will know, the lithium-based batteries at the heart of such technologies won't always operate like new, they will lose some energy capacity over time – meaning more time plugged in.
This discovery could improve the performance and life expectancy of a range of rechargeable batteries. Lithium-ion batteries power everything from smart phones and laptops to electric cars and large-scale energy storage facilities. Batteries lose capacity over time even when they are not in use, and older cellphones run out of power more quickly.
“Powered by cutting-edge technologies and extreme manufacturing capabilities, CATL has resolved the challenges caused by highly active lithium metals in zero-degradation batteries, which effectively helps prevent thermal runaway caused by oxidation reaction,” it said.
