Home » Legislation, Rules and Regulations » EU Battery Regulation The new EU Battery Regulation entered into force on 17 August 2023 and brings with it increasingly strict targets on recycling.
The EU could account for 17 % of that demand. According to some forecasts, the battery market could be worth of €250 billion a year by 2025. Batteries' manufacturing, use and end-of-life handling, however, raise a number of environmental and social challenges.
By 2030, the recovery levels should reach 95 % for cobalt, copper, lead and nickel, and 70 % for lithium; requirements relating to the operations of repurposing and remanufacturing for a second life of industrial and EV batteries; labelling and information requirements.
The European standardisation organisations CEN and CENELEC are currently drafting EN standards addressing performance, durability, safety, and sustainability for batteries, mandated by Standardisation request M/579 from 2021 (the 2021 version was based on a draft Regulation – an amendment is under preparation).
Labelling requirements will apply from 2026 and the QR code from 2027. The regulation amends Directive 2008/98/EC on waste management (see summary) and Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 on market surveillance and compliance of products (see summary). It repeals Directive 2006/66/EC on the disposal of spent batteries (see summary) from 30 June 2027.
