The advancement of energy storage technology is pivotal in transitioning towards a more sustainable and reliable energy system. It plays a crucial role in minimizing energy waste, improving grid stability, and facilitating the seamless integration of intermittent renewable energy sources.
Thermodynamic electricity storage adopts the thermal processes such as compression, expansion, heating and cooling to convert electrical energy into pressure energy, heat energy or cold energy for storage in the low period of power consumption, and then convert the stored energy into electrical energy at the peak of electricity consumption.
Battery technologies, such as lithium-ion batteries, are widely utilized for storing electricity across a range of applications, from portable electronics to grid-scale energy storage systems. Hydrogen storage is another example of chemical energy storage, offering a promising avenue for long-term and high-capacity energy storage solutions.
In this paper, three thermodynamic electricity storage technologies, namely CAES, CCES and PTES, are comprehensively reviewed. For each technology, the basic principle is firstly clarified and then system structures and storage devices are summarized. Thereafter, the corresponding demonstrations and costs of different routes are sorted out.
Unfortunately, none of the available energy storage technologies can meet the LDES requirements in terms of duration and cost. The newly emerged solid-oxide iron–air batteries (SOIABs) with energy-dense solid iron as an energy storage material have inherent advantages for LDES applications.
