The disassembly of the battery is a key factor in the implementation of viable end-of-life strategies, as it is not only necessary for repurposing and remanufacturing but also essential as a preparatory step for high quality and efficient recycling processes ( Glöser-Chahoud et al., 2021 ).
The fact is that, nowadays, there are few battery dismantling facilities and they are all located in Germany. This fact forces a centralized system to deal with EOL batteries that, consequently, ends up with the aforementioned high costs of transportations as EVs at EOL will be found anywhere in Europe.
After use in the vehicle, batteries can continue to be used sensibly, e.g. as a storage module. Together with our partner REMONDIS, we test and analyse battery systems and commission partner companies for the recycling or reuse process.
For instance, battery dismantling companies are only found in Germany, while recycling facilities are located just in four countries: France, Germany, Norway and Belgium. On the other hand, the steps of battery collection or 2 nd life preparation facilities are clearly less concentrated and spread along the territory.
This study focusses on the disassembling facilities, which is the second of the four key activities that have been identified once the battery has been removed from the vehicle, namely collection and transport, disassembly, recycling and 2nd life, as shown in Fig. 5.
Together with our partner REMONDIS, we test and analyse battery systems and commission partner companies for the recycling or reuse process. In addition to the environmentally-friendly handling of the batteries in the warehouse or during assembly, we aim to save resources with this project by identifying solutions for older or defective batteries.
