Controlling where the tip of the soldering iron sits, how much solder is applied, and how much heat is transferred to the board—among many other factors—will determine whether you’ll successfully replace a capacitor measuring 0.1mm.
In order to get started with micro soldering, you will need a few basic tools and materials. You should have a soldering iron or station (AiXun T3b e.g.), a soldering tip, solder, flux (AiXun solder flux lead free), and a desoldering tool. You will also need a few other tools, such as tweezers, a magnifying glass, a heat gun, and a multimeter.
Press the iron tip to the edge of the cap and add the solder. It should flow. Do one side at a time, for the first side you will need to hold cap in place with a tweezers. You can also you a paste of solder and flux that hold the cap in place before you touch it with the iron. You can buy this paste.
A good micro soldering microscope should have 0.5x to 10x optical zoom. Besides, it should have an extended work distance and the ability to attach a camera. The camera will help you to take pictures and record videos for further examination. A rework station generally includes at least a soldering iron and hot air gun.
Capacitors with nickel barrier terminations, which have a solder coat over the nickel, (or solder coated terminations) are restricted to the reflow temperature of the solder. Temperature cycling causes a change in the mean interatomic spacing of the atoms in the crystal lattice, due to variations in thermal energy.
Micro soldering is a difficult skill to master, but it is an essential skill for anyone working with electronics. With the right tools and materials, and a comprehensive understanding of the process, anyone can learn the basics of micro soldering. Micro soldering is a valuable skill that can help you to repair and upgrade electronic devices.

Capacitor Fundamentals: Part 13 – Soldering for Chip Capacitors
In this article, we discuss different chip capacitor attachment methods, thermal properties, and performance specifications to consider. Chip bonding to substrates can be categorized into two general classes: 1) methods involving solder and 2) those involving other bonds, such as epoxies and wire bonds (thermal-compression and ultrasonic bonding).
How To Solder and Desolder Connections
Never solder on devices that are powered on or plugged in. Unplug, turn off, and remove power sources before soldering. Don''t solder directly to hard-shell lithium-ion batteries (such as 18650 cells). The heat from the soldering iron will damage the battery internals. Use a battery spot welder instead. Be extremely careful if you''re soldering/desoldering lithium …
