The capacities of lead-acid batteries are very dependent on the temperature at which the battery is operating. The Capacity is normally quoted for a temperature of 25°C however, the capacity will reduce by about 50% at -25°C and will increase to about 10% at 45°C (figure 5).
The voltage of a typical single lead-acid cell is ∼ 2 V. As the battery discharges, lead sulfate (PbSO 4) is deposited on each electrode, reducing the area available for the reactions. Near the fully discharged state (see Figure 3), cell voltage drops, and internal resistance increases.
A lead-acid battery cell consists of a positive electrode made of lead dioxide (PbO 2) and a negative electrode made of porous metallic lead (Pb), both of which are immersed in a sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4) water solution. This solution forms an electrolyte with free (H+ and SO42-) ions. Chemical reactions take place at the electrodes:
The lead–acid battery is a type of rechargeable battery first invented in 1859 by French physicist Gaston Planté. It is the first type of rechargeable battery ever created. Compared to modern rechargeable batteries, lead–acid batteries have relatively low energy density. Despite this, they are able to supply high surge currents.
In a lead-acid cell the active materials are lead dioxide (PbO2) in the positive plate, sponge lead (Pb) in the negative plate, and a solution of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) in water as the electrolyte. The chemical reaction during discharge and recharge is normally written:
The EMF of lead-acid cells is dependent on chemistry although the actual terminal voltage differs depending on the battery design, this must be taken into account when using a voltmeter to determining the batteries state of charge. The capacity of a battery is usually expressed as a number of ampere-hours (Ah).

BU-403: Charging Lead Acid
Table 2: Effects of charge voltage on a small lead acid battery. Cylindrical lead acid cells have higher voltage settings than VRLA and starter batteries. Once fully charged through saturation, the battery should not dwell at the topping voltage for more than 48 hours and must be reduced to the float voltage level. This is especially critical ...
Battery Capacity Calculator
If you expand the "Other battery parameters" section of this battery capacity calculator, you can compute three other parameters of a battery. C-rate of the battery. C-rate is used to describe how fast a battery charges and discharges. For example, a 1C battery needs one hour at 100 A to load 100 Ah. A 2C battery would need just half an hour to ...
Lead-Acid Battery Voltage Chart For 6V, 12V, 24V, 48V Batteries
We see the same lead-acid discharge curve for 24V lead-acid batteries as well; it has an actual voltage of 24V at 43% capacity. The 24V lead-acid battery voltage ranges from 25.46V at 100% charge to 22.72V at 0% charge; this is a 3.74V difference between a full and empty 24V battery.. Let''s have a look at the 48V lead-acid battery state of charge and voltage decreases as well:

Battery Pack Sizing
Cell Capacity and Pack Size. There are very good reasons for selecting a battery cell and using it for multiple applications, thus leveraging the maximum buying opportunity for one cell rather than splitting this across 2 or 3 different cells. Here are the nominal voltages of the most common batteries in brief. Lead Acid. The nominal voltage of lead acid is 2 volts per cell, however when measuring the open circuit voltage, the OCV of a charged and rested battery should be 2.1V/cell. Keeping lead acid much below 2.1V/cell will cause the buildup of sulfation. While on float charge ...
