This paper presents an application of a simple assembly line balancing problem (SALB) in a lead-acid battery factory in Colombia. SALBP-1 was the selected approach to carry out the research. In this type of SALBP, there is a fixed cycle time, and the purpose is to minimize the number of workstations.
It is called a “lead-acid” battery because the two primary components that allow the battery to charge and discharge electrical current are lead and acid (in most case, sulfuric acid). Lead-acid batteries were invented in 1859 by Gaston Plante̒, a French physicist.
Lead-acid battery is perhaps among the most successful commercialized systems ever since thanks to its excellent cost-effectiveness and safety records. Despite of 165 years of development, the low energy density as well as the coupled power and energy density scaling restrain its wider application in real life.
In vented, non-maintenance-free lead–acid battery systems gases evolving from the water decomposition escape though the provided venting system. An appropriate ventilation takes care that the gases are quickly removed and do not accumulate to a critical level. This is crucial in order to eliminate the risk of an explosion.
However, a few studies have more directly evaluated the impact of SALBP on lead-acid battery (LAB) production line performance. These batteries are highly demanded in the automotive sector because of their life cycle length, design, and cost-effectiveness . Assembly lines are one of the most often configurations on battery production floors.
Technical progress with battery design and the availability of new materials have enabled the realization of completely maintenance-free lead–acid battery systems [1,3]. Water losses by electrode gassing and by corrosion can be suppressed to very low rates.

By design and layout lead–acid batteries hence provide a certain tolerance to overcharge as well as to reversal without side reaction leading to electrolyte decomposition and gassing. However, if the electric energy can no longer be used for the electrochemical conversion processes, the decomposition of water into hydrogen and oxygen starts.

Thermal events in lead-acid batteries during their operation play an important role; they affect not only the reaction rate of ongoing electrochemical reactions, but also the rate of discharge and self-discharge, length of service life and, in critical cases, can even cause a fatal failure of the battery, known as "thermal runaway." This contribution discusses the parameters …

The installation of sealed valve-regulated lead acid battery (VRLA) batteries and automobile batteries differs significantly. Automotive batteries often utilize polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or rubber separators, but sealed VRLA batteries demand tight assembly and absorbed glass mat (AGM) separators. Lead–acid batteries are comprised of a lead-dioxide cathode, a sponge metallic lead anode, and a sulfuric acid solution electrolyte. The widespread applications of lead–acid batteries include, among others, the traction, starting, lighting, and ignition in vehicles, called SLI batteries and stationary batteries for uninterruptable power supplies and PV systems.

Discharging a lead-acid battery creates lead sulfate crystals at both terminals. This affects the atomic structure of the plates, both of which become lead sulfate; The water ratio of the electrolyte increases, reducing performance as it goes flat. Recharging a battery converts the plates to lead or lead-oxide, renewing the electrolyte.
The objective of this study is to reduce the heat seal leak rejection in the lead-acid battery assembly process using Six Sigma''s DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control) methodology.

How do Lead-Acid Batteries Work? It is important to note that lead-acid batteries do not produce an electrical charge. They are only capable of receiving a charge from another source and discharging it later. The battery uses chemical reactions between the lead and acid to both store and discharge electrical current.
