In theory it is OK to connect them in parallel with two conditions: Each battery must be in a state where it can be voltage charged. This is fine for lead acid batteries unless they are very run down. Very discharged lead-acid batteries have to be charged with fixed current until they get to a minimum voltage, then they can be voltage charged.
Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid batteries must be tested every three years. In cases where backup power is unavailable, an on-line capacity test can be performed. In this type of test, the regular substation load is connected to the battery string, and is continuously monitored.

Very discharged lead-acid batteries have to be charged with fixed current until they get to a minimum voltage, then they can be voltage charged. The power supply is capable of maintaining the fixed float voltage. In practise, I think it's a good idea to put at least a diode in series with each battery just because stuff happens.
In actual practice, people put lead acid batteries in parallel and cycle them that way frequently. Just look at RV's and boats and off-grid installations. A fuse for each battery would not be a bad idea. If you are charging them all anyway then what does it matter if one discharges into another?
Multiply the time it takes to charge one battery by the number of batteries to arrive at the amount of time it will take to charge the battery bank. One method of charging batteries connected in parallel, is to connect the positive output of the charger to the positive terminal of the first battery.

How to Connect Batteries in Series and Parallel
• Lead-acid batteries These are the batteries used to power the electrical system of motorcycles, cars and trucks. They are low cost, deliver very high currents, are reliable and work well even at low temperatures. On the other hand, they are quite heavy, dangerous as lead is a toxic metal, they lose capacity due to mechanical stress and are not suitable for too long discharges due to …
Connecting Series-Parallel Batteries Tutorial
Measuring this voltage while the vehicle is idling is a good way to test the charging system. Examples of these type cells are nickel-cadmium (NiCd), lithium-ion used in many laptop computers, and lead-acid. If these are over charged this can damage the cells and could lead to spewing or explosion.
