The global battery technology market is valued at over USD 90 billion and is driven by the increased use of electric and hybrid vehicles, growing global interest in consumer electronics, and stricter government regulations on emissions.
"In terms of multifunctional properties, the new battery is twice as good as its predecessor — and actually the best ever made in the world," Professor Leif Asp said in the report. He has been working on structural batteries for nearly two decades.
A new electrode design by the French company NAWA Technologies is claimed to significantly extend battery life, tripling energy density and producing tenfold the power with immensely faster charging. The new electrode could potentially improve the performance of both existing and future battery chemistries.
The Lithium-ion battery has the greatest impact on EV growth, given its wide range of applications and further development potential. According to the IEA Global EV Outlook 2020 report, electric cars, which accounted for 2.6% of global car sales and about 1% of global car stock in 2019, registered a 40% year-on-year increase.
Tesla, considered the industry leader, is continuing to develop new battery technology, such as their lithium iron phosphate cathodes. These cathodes are cobalt-free, addressing concerns about the scarcity of raw resources.
