Plates are attached to the surface of battery cells or modules. They are engineered with the largest possible surface area to maximize contact with the battery and facilitate heat transfer away from the cells. The coolant fluid flowing inside the plate also enhances heat transfer.
A battery cooling plate is a flat component manufactured from thermally conductive materials like aluminum or copper. Its function efficiently removes excess heat generated during the battery's fast charging and discharging processes. Two simple schemes will show what is a cold plate and the main principles of thermal management.
Our study aims to address the issue of thermal management in lithium-ion batteries, particularly in extreme weather conditions. We propose a novel approach using hybrid cooling with wavy cold plates to enhance the thermal performance of the battery.
Conclusions In this study, we proposed effective thermal management for lithium ion battery pack with four types of wavy plates namely core model, optimised model, extended fin model and ripple model.
Larger cooling channel size is capable of decreasing the maximum temperature and improve cooling energy efficiency of the large cooling channel wavy cold plate battery pack with reduced cell temperatures, which further achieve temperature uniformity of cells in a battery pack.
Forced air cooling with complicated and improper BTMS structure includes uneven cooling of cells in the battery pack. Only cells exposed to the air can be cooled faster. Hence proper structure must be implemented. To address these challenges, a new simple design of wavy cold plate integrated with hybrid cooling were developed in this study.
