China's battery industry is the most vulnerable to consolidation over the next few years, due to overcapacity. By our estimates, utilization at battery factories in China languished at under 50% over the first eight months of 2023. Exports are helping to offset some of the pain, with China's share of the global battery market on the rise.
Asia's top battery players have taken a lot of risks to be global leaders in the EV supply chain. They've built up capacity for a market that has not yet fully arrived. To keep their lead, they now need to shift more investments abroad, even with oversupply in some home markets.
The path to this legislation has spanned three years, witnessing Asian battery companies transition from initial apprehensions to active participation, and ultimately, acceptance of the impending paradigm shift. Upon the new battery law's enforcement, Asian battery producers exporting to Europe will confront three primary challenges:
Potential Chinese battery investments on the continent were also likely to be complicated by the ongoing trade dispute between Brussels and Beijing over EU tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, he added. “The Koreans are not expanding, the Chinese have suspended construction and Europe’s new entrants are dropping like flies,” said Bush.
Lithium technologies are expected to advance quickly over the next few years. However, companies in China and beyond are frantically pursuing alternative batteries not centred around lithium, in part because the minerals needed to make the current options come from just a few countries.
But even before that happens, we are already seeing battery technology become increasingly politicized in both the United States and China. To bring the Michigan plant to fruition, Ford has been careful from the beginning. The deal it struck with CATL ensured that the Chinese company would not get any stake in the plant or ability to control it.

Clean electrification via batteries also involves charging from clean sources. Charging batteries from the power grid entails drawing power generated from a mixed source, where most of this power is generated from non-renewable sources, as shown in Figure 2 A. The GHG emissions of these sources are summarized in Figure 2 B, with the annual total GHG …

These new guidelines introduce significant changes poised to impact battery producers across the globe, with companies in China and Taiwan being at the forefront of these challenges. Key Highlights of the New Regulations: Beginning in 2027, any power batteries destined for European markets will mandatorily require a "Battery Passport."
With the uptake of battery-powered Electric Vehicles (EVs) accelerating globally, economic activity centered on high-tech lithium-ion battery production is poised to become the new engine of growth in the 21 st century. At present, State-backed Chinese companies dominate the world''s Li-ion supply chain from end to end (i

More than 90 percent of the main starting materials of a battery cell (i.e. anode, cathode, separator and electrolyte) come from three Asian countries.
This report analyses the emissions related to batteries throughout the supply chain and over the full battery lifetime and highlights priorities for reducing emissions. Life cycle analysis of electric cars shows that they already offer emissions reductions benefits at the global level when compared to internal combustion engine cars. Further increasing the sustainability …

Cost control sits high among Chinese firms'' reasons to seek alternatives. A battery typically carries 40% of the price tag of an EV, and the ability to minimise production cost is critical for firms to survive the nation''s brutal EV price wars .
