Interestingly, these areas are also characterized by the most severe air pollution, which has been suggested to be a primary cause for the reduction in solar radiation resources . Fig. 13. Spatial pattern of GSR trends in China for (a) 1961–1990, (b) 1990–2016, and (c) 1961–2016.
In the observation, there was abundant solar radiation over north China, the Tibetan Plateau and northwest China, while smaller values existed in central China, east China, and south China in all seasons. This pattern was successfully reproduced in the ensemble simulation.
Previous studies usually used limited observation data for modeling and analyzing global solar radiation in China , , that has a land area of ~9.6 million km 2. These limited data potentially result in partial valid conclusions owing to their inadequate representativeness.
The ENS was able to capture the observed annual and seasonal spatial pattern of surface solar radiation well over China, with PCCs ranging from 0.5 to 0.8 across the four seasons. The ENS performed well in simulating the monthly, seasonal-, and annual-mean climatology of surface solar radiation over China, with more added value.
Long-term solar radiation datasets were reconstructed across China. Global solar radiation in summer decreased by up to 1.83 W·m −2 ·decade −1. China’s PV power potential decreased by 1.69 kWh·m−2 ·decade −1 from 1961 to 2016. 30 provinces saw a 0.25–10.27% reduction in PV potential in the 2010s versus the 1960s.
As can be seen, the ensemble mean captured the seasonal distribution of solar radiation well over China, with the largest values (180–320 W m −2) in JJA and smallest values (60–200 W m −2) in DJF.

The projects take advantage both of high solar radiation in the desert and large amounts of cheap, available land. China aims to build more than 200 such bases to help to raise its renewables capacity to about 3.9 terawatts by 2030, more than three times its 2022 total.
For China, some researchers have also assessed the PV power generation potential. He et al. [43] utilized 10-year hourly solar irradiation data from 2001 to 2010 from 200 representative locations to develop provincial solar availability profiles was found that the potential solar output of China could reach approximately 14 PWh and 130 PWh in the lower …
