However, due to the corrosive nature the elecrolyte, all batteries to some extent introduce an additional maintenance component into a PV system. Lead acid batteries typically have coloumbic efficiencies of 85% and energy efficiencies in the order of 70%.
The performance and life cycle of Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) batteries for Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) application is considered in this paper. Cyclic test and thermal accelerated aging test is performed to analyze the aging mechanism resulting in gradual loss of performance and finally to battery's end of service life.
The production and escape of hydrogen and oxygen gas from a battery cause water loss and water must be regularly replaced in lead acid batteries. Other components of a battery system do not require maintenance as regularly, so water loss can be a significant problem. If the system is in a remote location, checking water loss can add to costs.
During discharge, electrons are passed externally through the load while internal chemical reactions at the interface of the electrolyte and the electrodes work to balance the charge equilibrium. Figure 3 illustrates the chemical states of a fully charged and discharged lead acid battery.
