The energy strategies in Mauritius, which have been demand-driven without incentives to reduce demand, can no longer be sustainable. It is the duty and responsibility of the Government to work towards decreasing carbon dioxide emissions in light of environmental issues.
In April 2007, the Government of Mauritius adopted the ‘Outline of the Energy Policy 2007-2025 - Towards a Coherent Energy Policy for the Development of the Energy Sector in Mauritius’. This document outlines the Government’s long-term vision for the energy sector.
Maurice Ile Durable is a vision that lays emphasis on the development of renewable energy, reduction of our dependence on imported fossil fuel, and the promotion of energy efficiency in line with the Government’s objective to promote sustainable development.
Although the Petroleum Act of Mauritius includes provisions for the granting of prospecting and mining leases for petroleum, as of today, Mauritius has no known indigenous sources of petroleum. The Consumer Protection Act of 1998 empowers Government to control the import and prices of petroleum products.
Approximately 2-3 MW of wind power may be needed annually in Mauritius, taking into consideration future growth in the night load demand. The strategy of the Government is to implement any future wind farm using the Build Operate Own (BOO) model.
Geothermal energy technology is well established and commercially available, but its application is site-dependent. As Mauritius is of volcanic origin, there is a probability that geothermal sites are available. However, exploration costs are exorbitant due to the need for deep drilling to access the thermal source.
