Due to the late start of China’s microgrid development and the relatively immature microgrid technologies and standards, as well as being in the early stages of promoting microgrids, China’s microgrid deployment is still largely in the experimental and exploratory stage.
Chen and Wei studied the solar photovoltaic microgrid in China and supposed that based on an understanding of the distributed solar radiation intensity in China, the microgrid can promote the local consumption of solar energy, and thus increase social welfare .
In March 2014, China’s first practical building integrated photovoltaic DC microgrid system ran successfully. The DC micro-grid locates at the campus of Xiang’an Energy Engineering, Xiamen University. The 150 kW solar PV panels are installed in the rooftop of the engineering laboratory building and connected to 380VDC bus through DC/DC converters.
The total investment is about 0.15 billion yuan. The system consists of 1000 kW wind power generation, 545 kW PV power generation, 30 kW ocean power generation and 1600 kW diesel power generation. The charger station and energy storage system are also installed in the system for the connection electric vehicle (EV) and to store renewable energy.
China, with a vast territory, also has abundance of solar resources. It is estimated that the absorbing solar radiation energy of the land surface per year is about 50 × 1018 kJ. The annual irradiation amount of all over China reaches 335–837 kJ/cm 2, and the average is 586 kJ/cm 2. But the distribution is lopsided.
