It is a variable capacitor when the actuation voltage is less than pull-in voltage and other is a switch. One of the applications of the variable MEMS capacitors and switches is the use of tunable resonators and filters to tune the resonance or central frequency, respectively.
When a DC voltage is applied between the membrane and a bottom electrode, the electrostatic force is created which causes movement of the metal membrane. This device can act as both a variable capacitor and a switch. It is a variable capacitor when the actuation voltage is less than pull-in voltage and other is a switch.
To avoid the problems of integration and noise, a new variable MEMS capacitor is designed to use in the HMSIW structures, for the first time. Hence, two basic and specific designs are presented and the mechanical behaviour of them is analysed and simulated using the FEM.
A novel expression for the Q factor of a MEMS capacitor was derived from an equivalent T-line model of the capacitor. Using the derived expression for Q factor and other parameters, Ashby analysis was performed to choose the best materials for the dielectric layer and metal plates.
Hence, the frequency, where the imaginary part of Y1 becomes zero, is the resonance frequency. Measurements show that the resonance frequency for 2.5 V bias is the lowest and is about 14.03 GHz, because the capacitance with 2.5 V bias has the highest capacitance. Therefore, this variable capacitor can be used at 10 GHz.
This paper explored RF-MEMS technology-based capacitors with a focus on Q factor improvements and material selection of the metal plates and dielectric layer. A T-line equivalent model of the MEMS capacitor was used for deriving the expression of the Q factor. Following this, the formula derived was verified through an intuitive method.
