The current control system is commanded by a superimposed battery voltage controller aimed at bringing the battery terminal voltage to the fully-charged state while also limiting the maximum battery charging current.
The control system can in turn drive a solid-state switch, such as a MOSFET placed in the path of the charger terminal, to disconnect the charger from the battery. Such a mechanism involves no blown fuses and allows the charger to be reused immediately after correcting the battery terminal polarity.
When a battery is connected to a circuit, the electrons from the anode travel through the circuit toward the cathode in a direct circuit. The voltage of a battery is synonymous with its electromotive force, or emf. This force is responsible for the flow of charge through the circuit, known as the electric current.
Thus, voltage control is an essential part of current control. When the battery is in CC charging phase, this protection becomes part of a continuous control strategy, which aims at keeping the current value constant within the given battery terminal voltage envelope.
This protection mechanism ensures that the current flowing into the battery is kept below a maximum permissible value. It is quite clear that one cannot push current into a load unless the impressed voltage is set to a value such that the required current flows against the load resistance.
More precisely, in this control system arrangement, the battery terminal voltage asymptotically approaches the desired state-of-charge related open-circuit voltage U oc (ξ) as the battery charging current i b approaches zero (see e.g. discussion by Pavković et al. 2014).
