The limitations in potential for the electroactive material of the negative electrode are less important than in the past thanks to the advent of 5 V electrode materials for the cathode in lithium-cell batteries. However, to maintain cell voltage, a deep study of new electrolyte–solvent combinations is required.
Lithium ions are embedded in the spent materials under the action of electric current. The capacity of spent materials after electrochemical repair is low (Table 3), which is likely to be due to the SEI film on the surface of the spent materials hindering the replenishment of Li, and lithium defects have not been completely repaired.
Two lines of research can be distinguished: (i) improvement of LiCoO 2 and carbon-based materials, and (ii) replacement of the electrode materials by others with different composition and structure. Concerning the positive electrode, the replacement of lithium cobaltate has been shown to be a difficult task.
Cathode materials for power lithium batteries usually require pretreatment before direct repair, which includes discharge, disassembly and separation of the spent cathode materials (Fig. 1 a). Since direct repair is based on the structure of the original cathode material, the pretreatment process needs to avoid any damage to its crystal structure.
However, the use of lithium metal as anode material in rechargeable batteries was finally rejected due to safety reasons. What caused the fall in the application of rechargeable lithium-anode batteries is also well known and analogous to the origin of the lack of zinc anode rechargeable batteries.
The latest research status of direct regeneration of spent lithium–ion batteries was reviewed and summarized in focus. The application examples of direct regeneration technology in production practice are introduced for the first time, and the problems exposed in the initial stage of industrialization were revealed.
