The Sofia offshore wind farm is located 195 kilometers off the North East coast of the U.K. on Dogger Bank in the central North Sea. Offshore installation is expected to begin in 2023, with project completion in 2026. The development will use the latest SG 14-222 DD turbines with 108-meter-long turbine blades and a 222-meter-rotor diameter.
The Sofia wind power project is being developed and will be operated by Innogy through its wholly-owned subsidiary Sofia Offshore Wind Farm (SOWFL). Innogy is a subsidiary of the German energy company E.ON.
Once operational, the energy generated by Sofia's turbines will save more than 2.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions* per year when compared to the use of fossil fuels in the UK. Sofia Offshore Wind Farm is currently 100% owned by RWE.
In what represents RWE and EDF’s largest renewable energy agreement to date, EDF will offtake all the wind energy that Sofia will produce, expected to be approximately 6.5 terawatt hours (TWh) each year.
Earlier this month, Renalfa IPP has started the commercial operation of its first utility-scale battery energy storage system. The 25 MW – 55 MWh facility in the town of Razlog in southwest Bulgaria is colocated with a 33 MW photovoltaic plant. It is one of the first BESS units in Eastern and Southeastern Europe and the largest one in Bulgaria.
Bulgaria already held the first two tenders for battery energy storage systems (BESS) that would be integrated with renewable electricity plants. Earlier this month, Renalfa IPP has started the commercial operation of its first utility-scale battery energy storage system.

Energy storage systems will be necessary for balancing the intermittent power generation from renewable energy sources and the production capacity of the electrolysis plant. There are numerous energy storage methods based on different technologies, and usually each of them has a specific application for which they are best suited. For instance, the hydrogen …
RWE has signed a fifteen-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with EDF for Sofia, one of the largest single offshore wind farms in the world; Agreement will bring renewable electricity to the equivalent of over 1.2 …
to assure all necessary power production from these resources. The main issue is the time stability of the electricity production of the solar (photovoltaics) and wind plants. The application of energy storage systems with sufficiently high capacity seems to be the only way to zero carbon emission energy. DOI: 10.17185/duepublico/73962
A 70% reduction of the On/Off cycles can be obtained. Moreover, if compared to an offshore wind-to-hydrogen production plant with no storage there is no substantial difference in terms of hydrogen production observed over the analysed period of one year in spite of a 70% round-trip efficiency of the energy storage device.
One of the main technical challenges of wind-to-hydrogen production plants is to couple intermittent and variable renewable power sources, such as wind turbines, with an electrolyser.
