In this study, a novel strategy of coating flame retardancy was adopted to prepare a highly flexible flame-retardant CPCM (FR-CPCM) by combining flexible flame-retardant coating (FRC) with flexible CPCM. Its thermophysical properties, flexibility, and flame retardancy were characterized and used for the thermal management of batteries.
While the direct addition of FRs can improve the flame retardation of PCM, unfortunately, the addition of significant amounts of FR frequently results in the deterioration of the mechanical properties and changes in the thermophysical properties of CPCM [45, 46].
The FRC-CPCM studied in this paper achieved better flame retardant effect with less flame retardant and higher latent heat. It shows that FRC has great application prospects in improving the flame retardancy of phase change materials.
Therefore, replacing flammable materials with fire retardant materials has been recognized as the critical solution to the ever-growing fire problem in these devices. This review summarizes the progress achieved so far in the field of fire retardant materials for energy storage devices.
The superior fire retardancy of NQSE50, as illustrated in Figure 19c, is attributed to the free-radical scavenging ability of TEP. By capturing flammable H· radicals and suppressing the combustion reaction, TEP significantly reduces fire hazards and enhances the overall safety of LMBs.
