The proposed test bench effectively distributes the current sharing between the battery and UC, such that 80% of the current is shared by UC and the battery supplies only 20% during the frequent stop and go city traffic conditions, thus reducing the burden on the battery.
This work provides an electric vehicle (EV) test bench with a motor/dynamometer setup with a battery and ultracapacitor (UC) hybrid energy storage. Extending the driving range and enhancing the battery life are the main concerns with EVs nowadays.
Fig. 1. shows the block diagram of the proposed test bench setup for EV emulation technique. The proposed test bench setup mainly focuses on testing the different power train components of EV system like DC–DC converter, energy storage elements mainly battery and UC in laboratory.
A test bench system with a DM coupled to a dynamometer is used to simulate on-road conditions for an EV system based on calculations of the vehicle’s equivalent rotational inertia and all the forces exerted on the vehicle. Simulation results clearly indicate that the test bench setup is very useful in predicting the maximum speed and torque requirements of DM for different driving scenarios for a given EV. Also, it can predict maximum DC-link current and power requirements for any predetermined driving cycle for a specific EV.
