New Zealand currently faces the challenge of needing around 7,000 GWh of deep energy storage** to deal with seasonal shifts in demand. Existing hydro lakes provide about 4,000 GWh of that and Huntly Power Station fills the gap, doing the job it was built to do. When national storage levels are running low, Huntly kicks in to help demand.
Meridian Energy is building New Zealand’s first large-scale grid-connected battery energy storage system (BESS) at Ruakākā on North Island Paris, January 10, 2023 – Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, has been awarded a major contract by Meridian Energy to construct New Zealand’s first large-scale grid-connected BESS.
The deal calls for Saft to equip a 100-MW/200-MWh facility at the Huntly Power Station, the country’s largest thermal power complex on New Zealand’s North Island. Saft said on Thursday it will engineer the battery storage system as a complete turnkey solution based on 70 of its Intensium Shift+ lithium-ion battery containers.
Located at Ruakākā in the country’s North Island, the 100-megawatt (MW) BESS will improve the stability of the national grid, as intermittent renewable power generation increases in New Zealand. The BESS is the first stage of a project that will include the construction of a co-located 130 MW solar farm by Meridian Energy.
As New Zealand decarbonises, Huntly is about to come into sharper focus. Let’s start the story here. Huntly Power Station has repeatedly drawn ire. Our purpose is to “power a sustainable and thriving Aotearoa,” – so the fact we own and operate a power station which burns coal and gas isn’t lost on us. burned at Huntly Jul ’23 to Jun ’24.
Nuclear power is not used in New Zealand. Source: First power station owned by government. Dismantled in 1941 Dam used as popular swimming spot. Decommissioned due to lightning strike damage. Believed to be the oldest hydro electric power station in the world that still operates.
