In solid electrolyte capacitors, a dry material (manganese dioxide) forms the cathode plate. A tantalum lead is embedded in or welded to the pellet, which is in turn connected to a termination or lead wire. The drawings show the construction details of the surface mount types of tantalum capacitors shown in this catalog.
Typical electrical characteristics of tantalum polymer capacitors are then presented. It is emphasized that the only significant electrical performance differences versus MnO2–based capacitors are the desired 2 to 3 times reduction in ESR and an undesired, but manageable increase in DC leakage current.
This oxide, tantalum pentoxide, has a dielectric constant of 26. The tantalum metal serves as the anode, and the cathode is usually made of a conductive material, often manganese dioxide in traditional tantalum capacitors. Another name for a wet tantalum capacitor is liquid tantalum capacitor or non-solid tantalum capacitor.
Based on the electrolyte, there are three classes of tantalum capacitors: liquid electrolyte (wet electrolyte), solid manganese dioxide, and polymer. Figure 2 shows the classes of tantalum electrolytic capacitors and the electrolytes used in the three tantalum capacitor types.
By using tantalum capacitor markings on the body of a component, one can easily identify the positive and negative terminals. The standard polarized capacitor symbol for a polarized capacitor serves as a visual guide for the proper orientation of the component in circuit diagrams.
Such low ESR in combination with high capacitance makes the tantalum polymer capacitor the fastest growing segment of the tantalum capacitor industry. The higher conductivity of the conductive polymer electrolyte improves the high-frequency capacitance of these capacitors.
Capacitor Symbols: Understanding Electrical Capacitor Symbols
The circuit diagrams log capacitors with symbols that identify the type of capacitor and, in most cases, what role they will play in a system. Representations change pictorially depending on whether a capacitor is polarized, non-polarized, or changeable. There are many shapes for the symbols, which interpreters and developers of electrical schematics must …
