The excellent electrochemical performance and safety performance make sodium ion batteries have a good development prospect in the field of energy storage . With the maturity of the industry chain and the accentuation of the scale effect, the cost of sodium ion batteries can approach the level of lead-acid batteries.
The current cycle life of sodium ion battery is about 2000–3000 times. With the advancement of technology and the application of sodium replenishment technology, the life time can be comparable to lithium ion, reaching 10,000 cycles life. (Table 1). Table 1. Sodium ion batteries are suitable for the application of large-scale power storage scenarios. At present, the highest energy density of sodium ion battery products is close to the level of lithium iron phosphate batteries, enough to match the energy storage requirements.
2.1. The revival of room-temperature sodium-ion batteries Due to the abundant sodium (Na) reserves in the Earth’s crust (Fig. 5 (a)) and to the similar physicochemical properties of sodium and lithium, sodium-based electrochemical energy storage holds significant promise for large-scale energy storage and grid development.
