In this paper, a new LAES-S-O system is proposed, which can effectively utilize the solar heat and the excess air compression heat. Compared with the traditional LAES system, it’s more efficient and more environmentally friendly due to the integration of solar energy.
A new liquid air energy storage system coupled with solar heat and organic Rankine cycle is proposed. Both the solar heat and air compression heat are effectively utilized. The influences of the split fraction of the air compression heat are deeply studied. Energy, exergy, and economic analyses of the new system are performed.
The concept of liquid air energy storage (LAES) can be traced back to 1977, but it has not been paid much attention until recent years. During off-peak hours, the surplus power of the grid is used to liquefy the air, while the heat of the air compression is also stored.
When λ is 6% and the lifetime ranges from 20 to 30 years, the LCOE changes from 0.1535 to 0.1434 $/kWh. Literature proposed a new LAES system coupled with solar heat through thermochemical energy storage (TCES), with a LCOE of 0.179–0.186 $/kWh, and the payback period is 10 years.
In conclusion, the integration of CPVS and LAES can enhance the solar energy utilization by leveraging the energy storage advantages and surplus refrigeration capacity of LAES units, prolonging the lifespan of CPV cells and improving the economic benefits of CPVS.
