In trying to measure the current output from a solar panel I've inadvertently short circuit the panel. Did I damaged the panel? How can I test if everything is ok? Does it still produce voltage when light is shone on it? I think the is high enough that it can't be damaged by short circuit. In fact, solar cells are rated by their .
The short-circuit current is the current through the solar cell when the voltage across the solar cell is zero (i.e., when the solar cell is short circuited). Usually written as I SC, the short-circuit current is shown on the IV curve below. IV curve of a solar cell showing the short-circuit current.
In principle the PV inverters are able to supply more short circuit current during fault scenarios than only 1 p.u. reactive current due to current reserve margin of the inverter system. The control is able to limit the current injection during faults to the nominal but also to an overload current limitation of the generation system.
As a result of the everincreasing share of renewable energy sources the short circuit current in the future will differ from the status quo. The fast control of the power electronics in wind and photovoltaic power conversion systems has the capability to control the current injection during balanced as well as unbalanced grid faults.
A solar panel is rated by its short circuit current and was likely shorted during testing. If your panel was damaged after you shorted it, it likely means that the panel itself was defective in some way. If you’re worried about damaging or overloading your solar panels, here are some common issues to educate yourself on:

Analytical model of DC bus and filter circuit of a PV system is established Liu et al., 2019, Zhou et al., 2018, the analytical formula of short-circuit current during fault is deduced, and then the equivalent circuit of short-circuit current calculation of PV system is obtained. This method is practical for engineering application, but lacks theoretical basis and experimental …
Effect of Light Intensity
Changing the light intensity incident on a solar cell changes all solar cell parameters, including the short-circuit current, the open-circuit voltage, the FF, the efficiency and the impact of series and shunt resistances. The light intensity on a solar cell is called the number of suns, where 1 sun corresponds to standard illumination at AM1.5, or 1 kW/m 2.
Short circuits: How they happen and how to prevent them
When in open-circuit no current is flowing within the string, and each module dissipates its generated power as heat uniformly. Conversely, when in short-circuit, current is flowing and takes the path of least resistance. Inherent variation in cell resistance module to module and within a module results in non-uniform heating, giving a ...
Solar panel short circuit
While it is conceivable that a solar panel may be damaged while running under short circuit, if it is then it is faulty and would also have been damaged by operating it at its design full power point. The optimum operating point of a solar panel is typically about 90%+ of its short circuit current and about 70% to 85% of its open circuit ...
