Do this only to the side you will be soldering, but both Positive and Negative sides of the battery have the coating on them that need to be removed. After the battery is pretty well scratched up put some soldering flux on it and carefully drop a bead of solder onto the battery. Please avoid contact between the tip of your iron and the battery.
Plating is probably the most commonly used of these processes. It is very important that plated deposits for soldering applications be free of porosity defects and chemical contaminants that adversely affect solderability. Stringent detailed plating requirements should be imposed so that assembly level solderability problems can be avoided.
The solder should pool on the terminal, if it doesnt you need to rough it up more, and try again. Strip both ends of each wire and then tin one end of each wire. Use the iron to heat up the solder on the terminal and insert the tinned end of the wire into the solder pool.
You will need a good soldering iron (preferably with variable temperature), wire cutters, wire strippers, lead free solder, Flux, at least one third hand apparatus, coin cell batteries, and a dental pick. A wire hanger could also probably work in a bind but the dental pick is relatively cheap and has a lot of precision.
*Electroless nickel-phosphorus plate shall not be used for soldering applications. If the phosphorus content should exceed 10%, the resulting deposit may be nonsolderable. Download these resources to learn more: Surfaces to be soldered in a flux-less environment must be coated prior to soldering.
Usually solder is plated on traces on the traces for solderability, but sometimes as an etch resist for work in process. Lead-free is the current standard, and pure lead would be plated onto circuit boards only very rarely. We can try to provide short answers to specific questions, Sooraj. Good luck.
Plating Requirements for Soldering Applications
For electrolytic nickel plate applications when lead-tin, lead-indium, tin-silver, tin-indium, lead-tin-silver or lead-silver solder alloys are used: Plate solderable nickel sulfamate (no brighteners) per QQ-N-290, 150-300 micro inches thick.

How To Solder and Desolder Connections
Don''t solder directly to hard-shell lithium-ion batteries (such as 18650 cells). The heat from the soldering iron will damage the battery internals. Use a battery spot welder instead. Be extremely careful if you''re soldering/desoldering lithium-polymer battery wires! You can easily short the battery with solder or your tools, resulting in battery damage and a fire hazard. …

Cold Plate and Heat Sink Soldering
S-Bond joining of heat sinks lowers the number of steps required for joining. S-Bond® materials join well to copper, aluminum and even composite materials of the same base such as Al:SiC and Cu-G. Frequently, S-Bond offers a lower total end-cost product compared to a conventional joining process since plating and flux clean-up are not required.
