The first contract awards for Ontario for the province’s expedited LT-1 energy capacity procurement have been announced, in which 739MW of battery storage bids were successful.
The Ontario government has concluded the largest battery storage procurement in Canada’s history and secured the necessary electricity generation to support the province’s growing population and economy through the end of the decade.
Eligible storage resources must be able to deliver energy to the grid for at least four consecutive hours. The procurement is designed to help Ontario meet electricity demand growth through to the end of this decade and put it on a pathway to cope with a projected 60% increase in demand over the next 25 years.
While margins are thought to be adequate today, demand for power is projected to continue growing rapidly in Ontario in the second half of this decade. In addition to the 881MW of chosen winners, more are expected: the provincial government demanded the IESO make a total procurement of between 1500MW to 2500MW of energy storage in October 2022.
The projects are expected to be in service by 2026 and will join the already-announced 250-megawatt Oneida Energy Storage facility that is scheduled to be in service in 2025. Ontario currently has 228 megawatts of storage capacity on the grid at the pumped storage Sir Adam Beck facility.
