During the charging process of the heat storage system, solar energy is stored in the form of sensible heat, latent heat, and chemical energy through the calcination and melting of CaCO 3 /CaO-CaCl 2 solid solution and during the discharge process, CaCO 3 /CaO-CaCl 2 undergoes carbonation and solidification, releasing heat for power generation.
Incorporating storage into concentrating solar power (CSP) systems enables dispatchable generation, whereby utilities produce power to match demand. This efficient method of power production overcomes intermittency challenges faced by other forms of renewable energy production. It also reduces the cost of solar energy through higher utilization.
Thermal energy from the sun can be stored as chemical energy in a process called solar thermochemical energy storage (TCES). The thermal energy is used to drive a reversible endothermic chemical reaction, storing the energy as chemical potential.
The authors believed that the solution to the high energy consumption problem of calcium-looping was to use solar energy as a power source and improve the material's light absorption characteristics.
Considering the poor light absorption performance of calcium-based materials, Karasavvas et al. designed a solar calcium-looping heat storage system using CO 2 as the heat exchange medium. During the day, calcination was carried out, and CO 2 was directly heated to above 1223 K in a solar receiver.
For example, the energy density of a conventional calcium-looping (CaL) heat storage system is calculated to be approximately 4.7 GJ/m 3 based on the reaction enthalpy, but if factors such as environmental gas, reactor structure, and reaction conditions are taken into account, the energy density will be reduced to 1–2 GJ/m 3 .
