If the batteries will be mounted into the device, such as on the handle or in a separate housing that will need to be accessible, injection molded plastic is commonly used. In some circumstances, metal casings will be required for the battery pack. This option is suitable for battery packs that will be used for traction applications.
Our solutions include cans, cases, lids, tabs, rolls, and laminated films (aluminum – and polypropylene-based). The cylindrical cell continues to be one of the most widely used packaging styles for primary and secondary batteries. The advantages to using this cell format are manufacturing convenience and mechanical stability.
One perception is that plastics are not suitable for battery packs as they cannot prevent thermal runaway and fires. However in testing, an aluminium plate was exposed for 5 minutes to a flame with a temperature of 1100 ºC. The same test on a plate made from long glass fibre polypropylene and a flame retardant (FR) resin reacted very differently.
Battery packaging materials play a crucial role in the lithium-ion battery manufacturing process. Indeed, considerable cost savings can be achieved when an adequate combination of mechanical, permeation, and seal-strength properties is present in the selected packaging material.
Taped battery packs are packed together using tape. Shrink-wrap battery packs use heat shrink tubing to contain the cells. This is the most common packaging available and is typically sufficient for small battery packs. In larger, heavier battery packs, manufacturers may add a sheet of structural material to the top and bottom of the pack.
