Aluminum electrolytic capacitor construction delivers colossal capacitance because etching the foils can increase surface area more than 100 times and the aluminum-oxide dielectric is less than a micrometer thick. Thus the resulting capacitor has very large plate area and the plates are intensely close together.
Mount the capacitors with the vents up to reduce the amount of electrolyte expelled if a vent operates. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are normally polarized and require correct-polarity installation in the circuitry. To ensure correct mounting and identification of the polarity, put a clear + and/or – on the board layout marking.
If an aluminum electrolytic capacitor has a reverse voltage applied, its capacitance will decrease, its leakage current will increase and the capacitor may explode. Besides the application of a reverse voltage, overvoltage, AC voltage or capacitor failure, internal gas pressure can be generated at a rate the package cannot contain mechanically.
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors can generally withstand extreme overvoltage transients of limited energy. Application of overvoltage more than about 50 V beyond the capacitor’s surge voltage rating causes high leakage current and a constant-voltage operating mode quite like the reverse conduction of a zener diode.
These are available for momentary-duty AC applications like motor starting and voltage-reversing applications, but the high DF of aluminum electrolytic capacitors – from 2% to 150% – causes excess heating and short life in most AC applications.
Unless otherwise specified on our product datasheets, our alu-minum electrolytic capacitors can operate to 80,000 feet and pressures as low as 3 kPa. However, above 10,000 feet (3 km, 70 kPa) altitude the ripple current ratings need to be reviewed due to the lowering of the convection coeficient caused by the low-er air density and mass flow rate.
