Batteries housed in enclosures are notorious for having poor access. The writer has seen examples of enclosures, which are over 1m deep with less that 50mm between the top of cells and the underside of the shelf above.
The space requirements for battery systems must comply with 110.26. Working space is measured from the edge of the battery cabinet, racks, or trays. For battery racks, there is a minimum clearance of 25 mm (1 in.) between a cell container and any wall or structure on the side not requiring maintenance access. (Note: The Passage does not provide information about the total space required for a battery system.)
It would also be prudent to increase this distance where the battery is housed in an enclosure. Batteries in enclosures are best mounted on rails rather than a solid shelf. Good designs use perforated shelves and increase the spacing to 15mm between cells or monoblocs.
Battery locations must comply with 480.9 (A) and (B). Requirements for (A) include provisions for sufficient diffusion and ventilation of gases from the battery, if present, to prevent the accumulation of an explosive mixture. Requirements for (B) include guarding of live parts, which shall comply with 110.27.
