Thermal effects in the context of solar cells refer to the changes in their electrical and optical properties due to variations in temperature. As solar cells operate, they invariably generate heat.
In the present article, a state-of-the-art of solar cells operating under thermal stress, at temperatures >100°C, is established. In the following section, physics governing the sensitivity to temperature of solar cells is summarized, with an emphasis on the critical elements for pushing the limits to high-temperature levels.
Thermal effects on solar cells emerge as a pervasive and intricate challenge, considering that solar panels contend with a broad spectrum of temperatures, significantly influencing their efficiency and durability.
The influence of temperature on the current, voltage and power output of crystalline solar cell is considered. The semiconductor material most important physical properties that change with temperature are: the band gap, which decreases, e.g. Eq. (1.4) and the minority-carrier lifetime, which increases with the temperature rise.
The fundamental physics governing the thermal sensitivity of solar cells and the main criteria determining the ability of semiconductor materials to survive high temperatures are recalled. Materials and architectures of a selection of the solar cells tested so far are examined.
The causes of such deviations are multiple ( Temperature Sensitivity of Solar Cells in a Nutshell) and are usually investigated by analyzing additional experimental data, such as the EQE, and the typical figures of merit: short-circuit current ( Jsc ), open-circuit voltage, and fill factor values extracted from the I-V curves.
Reduced thermal effect of AZO/Cu/AZO infrared filter film for solar cell
If the surface of the Si solar cell is covered with a frequency-selective infrared filter film [10], the temperature rise caused by the infrared heat radiation effect of the solar cell can be effectively reduced, thereby to reduce the temperature rise after the solar cell is operated for a long time. Current commercial infrared filters are too expensive and complicated to be feasible …
