Despite this, in discussions of battery design the negative electrode of a rechargeable cell is often just called "the anode" and the positive electrode "the cathode". In its fully lithiated state of LiC 6, graphite correlates to a theoretical capacity of 1339 coulombs per gram (372 mAh/g).
Generally, the negative electrode of a conventional lithium-ion cell is graphite made from carbon. The positive electrode is typically a metal oxide or phosphate. The electrolyte is a lithium salt in an organic solvent.
The battery anode is always negative and the cathode positive. This appears to violate the convention as the anode is the terminal into which current flows. A vacuum tube, diode or a battery on charge follows this order; however taking power away from a battery on discharge turns the anode negative.
The electrodes are the heart of the battery where all the electrochemical reactions occur. Testing of the electrodes prior to battery assembly provides insights into their composition, morphology and electrochemical performance.
In a real full battery, electrode materials with higher capacities and a larger potential difference between the anode and cathode materials are needed.
Some important design principles for electrode materials are considered to be able to efficiently improve the battery performance. Host chemistry strongly depends on the composition and structure of the electrode materials, thus influencing the corresponding chemical reactions.

Abstract Among high-capacity materials for the negative electrode of a lithium-ion battery, Sn stands out due to a high theoretical specific capacity of 994 mA h/g and the presence of a low-potential discharge plateau.
