There are two main drivers. One is technological innovation. We're seeing multiple new battery products that have been launched that feature about 30% higher energy density and lower cost. The second driver is a continued downturn in battery metal prices. That includes lithium and cobalt, and nearly 60% of the cost of batteries is from metals.
The cost of raw materials, particularly lithium carbonate, plays a significant role in the pricing of lithium-ion batteries. The recent decrease in lithium prices has been a major factor in lowering battery costs. As lithium is a key component in these batteries, fluctuations in its price directly impact the overall cost of battery production.
The cost of battery storage systems has been declining significantly over the past decade. By the beginning of 2023 the price of lithium-ion batteries, which are widely used in energy storage, had fallen by about 89% since 2010.
Figure ES-2 shows the overall capital cost for a 4-hour battery system based on those projections, with storage costs of $245/kWh, $326/kWh, and $403/kWh in 2030 and $159/kWh, $226/kWh, and $348/kWh in 2050.
The suite of publications demonstrates wide variation in projected cost reductions for battery storage over time. Figure ES-1 shows the suite of projected cost reductions (on a normalized basis) collected from the literature (shown in gray) as well as the low, mid, and high cost projections developed in this work (shown in black).
The economics of battery storage is a complex and evolving field. The declining costs, combined with the potential for significant savings and favorable ROI, make battery storage an increasingly attractive option.
