The pace of integration of energy storage systems in MENA is driven by three main factors: 1) the technical need associated with the accelerated deployment of renewables, 2) the technological advancements driving ESS cost competitiveness, and 3) the policy support and power markets evolution that incentivizes investments.
The existing literature illustrates the feasibility of the integration of the renewable energy sources (RESs), energy storage equipment and EVCSs, with the purpose of absorbing the renewable energy output and improve the intermittent of the renewable energy.
It is important to compare the capacity, storage and discharge times, maximum number of cycles, energy density, and efficiency of each type of energy storage system while choosing for implementation of these technologies. SHS and LHS have the lowest energy storage capacities, while PHES has the largest.
Energy storage and utilization could be revolutionized by new technology. It has the potential to assist satisfy future energy demands at a cheaper cost and with a lower carbon impact, in accordance with the Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP27) and the Paris Agreement.
