Despite having very low specific energy of 20–40 Wh kg −1, these batteries find major application in the charging stations of electric vehicles as they are economic for large plants [ 10, 11 ]. The higher atomic weight of lead owes to reduce the specific energy and power of the battery.
The use of lithium batteries is the most important technology in the current market of electric vehicles because of its high-power density and energy density. Also being small element lithium possesses high electrochemical potential with low equivalent weight. Further, these batteries have high life span along with good cycle life and shelf life.
This study aims to establish a life cycle evaluation model of retired EV lithium-ion batteries and new lead-acid batteries applied in the energy storage system, compare their environmental impacts, and provide data reference for the secondary utilization of lithium-ion batteries and the development prospect of energy storage batteries.
Most of today's all-electric vehicles and PHEVs use lithium-ion batteries, though the exact chemistry often varies from that of consumer electronics batteries. Research and development are ongoing to reduce their relatively high cost, extend their useful life, use less cobalt, and address safety concerns in regard to various fault conditions.
Among the various rechargeable battery technologies adopted, lithium-ion batteries and nickel-metal hydride batteries have undergone continuous development. The main parameters considered in employing the battery in electric vehicles are energy density, power density, cycle life, cost and environmental safety.
The results show that the environmental impacts of lithium-ion batteries in the production phase are higher than lead-acid batteries. However, they have lower environmental impacts in the use phase because of their higher charging and discharging efficiency.
