The market around the recycling of lithium-ion batteries is huge and growing, mostly thanks to electric vehicles. Surely, a lot of other lithium-ion batteries get recycled, including from phones and power tools, but the majority comes from EVs. In 2019, it was estimated that the recycling market was worth $1.5 billion.
The report, which analysed the economics of recycling lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, found that the value of end-of-use automotive packs is currently £3.3/kg for battery electric vehicles and £2.2/kg for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
Now, though, a number of startups are commercializing cleaner and more efficient recycling techniques, and building dedicated lithium-ion battery recycling factories at an unprecedented scale. Many of the founders come armed with experience they gained from prior stints in battery manufacturing.
The cost to break the battery down is similar to lead acid, mostly because the process uses similar equipment, and the operating expenses are comparable — about $100 to $200 per metric ton of the black mass paste. Black mass (the mixture of nickel, manganese, and cobalt oxides with carbon) makes up about 60% of the incoming battery weight.
Electric vehicles (EVs) powered by lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have emerged as one of the most promising options (Crabtree, 2019). In the coming decade, the LIB market is predicted to grow exponentially, due to an industry and policy push and consumer pull of EVs (International Energy Agency, 2019).
But in contrast more profound changes in battery chemistries – he cites solid state lithium ion batteries as an example – may enhance the profitability of their recycling because the absence of flammable electrolyte will make them easier and therefore cheaper to recycle.
