A new big battery in an industrial precinct north of Bunbury in Western Australia has won development approval, and promises to be developer Sunrise Energy Group''s largest project to date.
This round of investment builds off of a previous round of program funding in which DOE awarded a total of $1.82 billion to 14 projects. Round one awardees will build and expand commercial-scale facilities to extract lithium, graphite, and other battery materials, and battery component manufacturing.
The battery box assembly plant in Iruña de Oca (Alava) will receive an investment of 32.26 million euros and aid of 4.8 million euros, and another similar plant in Almusafes (Valencia) will receive an investment of 33.38 million euros and five million euros in aid.
The project will finance the construction of four high-voltage (HV) and four low-voltage (LV) battery pack assembly lines in Springboro, Ohio. ABS will also upgrade its existing battery cell testing and quality control equipment at its existing facility in Lake Orion, Michigan.
As part of the Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing and Recycling Program, DOE is enabling $16 billion in total investment for battery manufacturing, processing, and recycling.

This project is one of many projects benefitting from these efforts, and it will strengthen the domestic lithium-ion battery manufacturing base and supply ecosystem. The project will directly benefit Springboro, Ohio, and Lake Orion, Michigan, as well as several surrounding communities.
