A minimized tolerance (±0.35 mm) of the overall length l1 of the capacitor (figure 16) avoids un-wanted mechanical forces on the terminals, especially when several capacitors are mounted be-tween heat sink and bus bar. Generally, the materials used for aluminum electrolytic capacitors must meet strict purity re-quirements, and those used for producing LL grade capacitors must be specially selected. The de-sign effort required for such capacitors affects both the case size and the price.
For this purpose, the rated voltage is applied to the capacitors via a series resistance of approxi-mately 100 for VR 100 V DC, or 1000 for VR >100 V DC, for a period of one hour. Subsequently, the capacitors are stored under no-voltage conditions for 12 to 48 hours at a tem-perature between 15 and 35 °C.
It depends on the capacitor design and is stated in the re-spective IEC climatic category. If this limit is exceeded the capacitor may fail prematurely. For some type series, however, operation at temperatures above the upper category temperature is permissible for short periods of time. Details are given in the individual data sheets.
Specific mounting conditions: For smaller lead spaces than 22.5 mm, the capacitor shall be mechanically fixed by the leads. For lead spaces ≥22.5 mm, the capacitor shall be fixed by the leads and the body must be properly clamped.
