The well-known existing general battery models; mathematical model, electrochemical model, and equivalent circuit-based model have been defined in the literature for various applications. The properties of lithium ion batteries predicted and described using mathematical models are based on empirical formulas and stochastic techniques.
The SOC of the lithium ion battery is usually estimated using Equivalent-Circuit Models (ECM), which are frequently employed. But the intrinsic chemical reactions occurring within the cell are not represented by this model and hence these models produce poor predictions of aging.
Early mechanical models for lithium-ion batteries were developed by Christensen and Newman, and Zhang et al. These models couple mechanics and electrochemistry, describing the volume change and stresses in electrode particles as a function of lithium concentration.
Lithium-ion battery electrochemical and thermal dynamics are comprehensively reviewed. Multiscale modeling is analyzed, considering physical limits and computational costs.
