The Ecuadorian electricity sector is considered strategic due to its direct influence with the development productive of the country. In Ecuador for the year 2020, the generation capacity registered in the national territory was 8712.29 MW of NP (nominal power) and 8095.25 MW of PE (Effective power). Based on what has been described, it is identified that there is a high potential for electricity generation in Ecuador, especially the types of projects and specific places to start them up by the central state and radicalize the energy transition.
Ecuador since the end of last year has been struggling with power cuts that the goverment attributes to mismanagement of power plants and a dry spell caused by the El Niño weather pattern. The nation of 15 million people invested heavily in hydroelectric power over the past two decades as it looked to promote cheap and renewable energy sources.
This discrepancy between residential and industrial areas has raised concerns in Ecuador’s business community over the future of the economy. Companies in the South American nation are losing an estimated $700 million each week from daily power cuts, according to the chamber of commerce in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city.
In this research, an analysis of the electricity market in Ecuador is carried out, a portfolio of projects by source is presented, which are structured in maps with a view to an energy transition according to the official data provided.
The main regulatory body, which regulates and controls all areas of the electricity sector in Ecuador, is the Consejo Nacional de Electricidad (CONELEC) or the National Electricity Council. In 2015, the government reorganised the functions of CONELEC and renamed it Agencia de Control y Regulación de Electricidad (ARCONEL).
