In Zimbabwe, the power crisis and increasing integration of renewable energy sources like solar PV and the largely accepted bioenergy would lead to the need for energy storage. Abandoned mines and transboundary aquifers in the country can be refurbished to operate as pump energy storage plants.
Energy storage has the potential to play a crucial role in the future of the power sector. However, significant research and development efforts are needed to improve storage technologies, reduce costs, and increase efficiency.
The energy storage industry faces several notable limitations and gaps that hinder its widespread implementation and integration into power systems. Challenges include the necessity for appropriate market design, regulatory frameworks, and incentives to stimulate investment in energy storage solutions.
Impact of energy storage system policy ESS policies are the reason storage technologies are developing and being utilised at a very high rate. Storage technologies are now moving in parallel with renewable energy technology in terms of development as they support each other.
These policies are mostly concentrated around battery storage system, which is considered to be the fastest growing energy storage technology due to its efficiency, flexibility and rapidly decreasing cost. ESS policies are primarily found in regions with highly developed economies, that have advanced knowledge and expertise in the sector.
Outdated master plans, local plans and building by-laws are failing to effectively regulate development and address the stresses caused by climate change. Enforcement of planning laws is also another issue, especially in Harare. Some settlements are just mushrooming whilst the Council ignores these developments.
