This is too large for the use as a single-absorber photovoltaic device, exhibiting a low Shockley-Quiesser (S-Q) efficiency limit of ~23% under AM1.5G illumination (1, 4). Se solar cells thereby declined as the rapid development of Si photovoltaic industry.
An optimal p–n junction combined with optimal light absorption can lead to a solar cell efficiency above the Shockley–Queisser limit. Here, we show how this is possible by studying photocurrent generation for a single core–shell p–i–n junction GaAs nanowire solar cell grown on a silicon substrate.
Silicon dominates the photovoltaic industry but the conversion efficiency of silicon single-junction solar cells is intrinsically constrained to 29.4%, and practically limited to around 27%. It is possible to overcome this limit by combining silicon with high-bandgap materials, such as III-V semiconductors, in a multi-junction device.
A detailed limit calculation for these cells with infinite bands suggests a maximum efficiency of 77.2% To date, no commercial cell using this technique has been produced. As discussed above, photons with energy below the bandgap are wasted in ordinary single-junction solar cells.
Now the best perovskite cells (efficiency under standard test conditions η = 25.2%) approach the best silicon solar cells (η = 26.7%) in efficiency, despite the far shorter time since their introduction to the research community.
