1. Construction of sealed lead acid batteries Positive plate: Pasting the lead paste onto the grid, and transforming the paste with curing and formation processes to lead dioxide active material. The grid is made of Pb-Ca alloy, and the lead paste is a mixture of lead oxide and sulfuric acid.
3.3 Battery Self-discharge The lead acid battery will have self-discharge reaction under open circuit condition, in which the lead is reacted with sulfuric acid to form lead sulfate and evolve hydrogen. The reaction is accelerated at higher temperature. The result of self-discharge is the lowering of voltage and capacity loss.
When the lead acid battery is discharging, the active materials of both the positive and negative plates are reacted with sulfuric acid to form lead sulfate. After discharge, the concentration of sulfuric acid in the electrolyte is decreased, and results in the increase of the internal resistance of the battery.
The sealed, valve regulated lead acid battery design, eliminates these problems through continuous recombination of the oxygen during charging. In a tubular Gel VRLA battery the electrolyte is in the form of thixotropic gel, which is not spillable.
Reactions of Sealed Lead Acid Batteries When the lead acid battery is discharging, the active materials of both the positive and negative plates are reacted with sulfuric acid to form lead sulfate.
Cells are equipped with flame arrestors with a filling funnel. Add water through the filling funnel by removing the dust cap, but without removing the flame arrestors from the cell covers. The best time to add water to the stationary lead-acid battery is when the recharge or equalizing charge is about two-thirds completed.

4 (lead sulphate) re-forms as Pb (spongy lead). The general formula (see beside), concerning the total transformation occurring during the charge/discharge phases, corresponds to an electric quantity of 2F (Farads) or 53.6 Ah (Ampere/hour). For a discharge reaction to occur, one would therefore require active materials in a ratio of 239.2 grams ...

The most common type of battery is the lead-acid battery, which consists of lead dioxide (PbO2) and sponge lead (Pb) electrodes in an electrolyte of sulfuric acid (H2SO4). When a lead-acid battery is discharged, the PbO2 electrode reacts with the H2SO4 electrolyte to form PbSO4 and water. The Pb electrode does not react under normal conditions ...
