Thermal energy storage (TES) systems can store heat or cold to be used later, at different conditions such as temperature, place, or power. TES systems are divided in three types: sensible heat, latent heat, and sorption and chemical energy storage (also known as thermochemical).
In summary, the energy storage types covered in this section are presented in Fig. 10. Note that other categorizations of energy storage types have also been used such as electrical energy storage vs thermal energy storage, and chemical vs mechanical energy storage types, including pumped hydro, flywheel and compressed air energy storage. Fig. 10.
Traditionally, heat storage has been in the form of sensible heat, raising the temperature of a medium. Examples of such energy storage include hot water storage (hydro-accumulation), underground thermal energy storage (aquifer, borehole, cavern, ducts in soil, pit) , and rock filled storage (rock, pebble, gravel).
Storage of heat is accomplished by sensible and to a lesser extent latent thermal energy storage in many applications, and less research is available on chemical and thermochemical heat storage. The key enabling technologies in most storage systems are in systems engineering and material science.
These include TES modes, material thermal properties, formulation and modeling approaches, thermal enhancement techniques for sensible and latent thermal storage systems and design configurations of heat storage facilities.
An example of thermochemical storage is the use of an open adsorption storage system for heating and cooling in a district heating in Munich, Germany (Hauer, 2007). An open adsorption system using zeolite was installed to heat a school building in winter and to cool a jazz club in summer time. The system is presented in Fig. 1.14.

With the trend of large-capacity storage systems and high battery rates, temperature controller is becoming more and more important. Classified by function, electrochemical energy storage can be divided into two types: energy-based energy storage (high energy input/output) and power-based energy storage (instantaneous high-power input/output).
