The design of your solar system will depend on the size and shape of your roof and how much sunlight it receives. Solar panels can be installed on roof areas that face north, east, west or, in some cases, south. Panels on north-facing roofs usually receive the most sunlight over the day and so generate the most electricity.
If we go with a traditional solar installation, it takes up the entire rooftop space and only gives us a height of 500mm above the ground (it is for cleaning purposes to remove dust and debris). If we choose an elevated design, we will have a clearing distance of 2000 mm (depending on the consumer’s needs) from the ground level.
The type of roof will affect how your solar panels are installed. It is generally easier to attach solar panels to a corrugated steel roof than to a tiled roof. Very steep roofs or double-storey roofs are harder to access and may increase the cost of the installation.
The positioning and tilt of your solar panels significantly impact their energy production. While south-facing roofs generally receive the most sunlight, east and west-facing roofs can also be viable options.
Bigger chunks of roof are easier, and cheaper, to install solar panels. Keep in mind that a standard residential solar panel is roughly five and a half feet tall by three feet wide. Pictured below, this 290 to 320 watt solar panel from URE represents a standard residential product. Panel sizes vary by manufacturer and model.
Rack mounting also adds to the cost. Tilt frames can also be used on sloped roofs, but this is less common. For example, if the only available roof area faces south, it may be possible to use rack mounting to face panels north. Solar panels generate less electricity if they are shaded by trees, buildings or other obstructions.
